Is it more sustainable to drink out of a paper cup or out of a glass that you have to wash?
It takes 2 cups of water to wash a cup out
It uses trees and water to make the paper for the paper cup
Refuse from all of the thrown out cups
What are all of the ways we use water on our campus each day? Where do you think it is wasted the most?
DRINKING(reallly important)
soda (sugar water)
Icees (frozen sugar water)
bottled water (duh)
Using bathroom after lunch (not again!)
Washing hands
Washing food (I hope)
Lilly pond
'ool (no P)
watering plants
showers after PE and swimming
Is water reused anywhere on our campus? Where / how could water be recycled?
Gray water is reused in Case (supposedly)
Contamination?
Does all the water that goes down the drain have to go down the drain? What goes down the drain with it?
Is all of the water we use from our spring? What percentage of our needed water does it supply?
How long will our island's water supply last?
How much water do we use to maintain the landscaping at Punahou? Could that be reduced by using different plants?
Do we use gray water to water plants? How hard would it be to set up a gray water system?
At Case, we do (kind of a given)
Project Ideas:
I think that a lot of water is being used up on watering the grass and plants around the Punahou campus. It seems that some sprinklers are watering roads and sidewalks more than the grass. I think that it would be a good idea to use gray water treatment.
